Worship Ministry Weekly Update

Happy Friday!

Here’s what you need to know this week.

This Sunday

Full worship ministry is leading. Call time for instrumentalists, praise team, and A/V is 8:00am on stage. Choir meets in the choir room at 8:35am.

The sermon text for the day comes from Matthew 16:21-25, and Pastor Scott will be preaching.

We’re singing Psalm 46 (Lord of Hosts), It Was Finished Upon that Cross, Christ the Sure and Steady Anchor, and Come Unto Jesus.

Notes

  • I try to mention every once in a while that we have a Life Group that meets in the choir room each Sunday during the 9:00 service, right after we lead worship for the service. If you haven’t found a Life Group and want to join us, you are welcome! The teacher is kind of goofy, but we have a great time looking at the Word.

  • CDs for the Fall anthems are now available in the choir room. Be sure to pick one up! We’ll have a Christmas CD available soon as well.

  • Would you help us with a little recruiting? We are in need of a few people to serve in A/V for the 9:00 service. We try to schedule those volunteers in the service they normally attend so they don’t miss a life group, so we’re primarily looking for people in the 9:00 worship service. If you can think of someone that might be a good fit to serve there, feel free to pass along their name to me so we can connect.

  • Christmas in Cookeville has been scheduled for the weekend of December 15. Please mark your calendars.

Prayer requests

  • Ricky Gentry, with COVID and possible sepsis.

  • Julie Galloway’s cousin (Roger), having cataract surgery on both eyes.

  • Maleah Keith’s mom, having the first of two knee replacements on Monday.

  • Betty Speck, back issues and undergoing additional test for a small spot of cancer they found.

  • Kathy Dyer (Billy’s wife), with kidney issues and a knee replacement coming up in November.

  • Thomas Jacobs, undergoing cancer treatments.

  • Reagan Bagci, having knee procedure on Oct.16.

An Extra

My doctoral supervisor at Southern Seminary is Dr. Matthew Westerholm, and he publishes an excellent newsletter about worship, culture, and theology. His latest entry is about the importance of local church ministry, rooted in your particular context.

Many Christians are tempted to look to online resources and other preachers as their sole source of spiritual nourishment. However, the best spiritual help you will receive will always come at your local church.

He compares the local “flavor” of church to the way people eat “local” honey to help them with allergies in their area. It’s a helpful analogy as we think through what it means to be a part of Stevens Street, here in Cookeville, Tennessee.

Are there pollens in the air that are affecting our faith? Are there real spiritual difficulties in our context that we need to be aware of and protected from?

You can check out that article right here.

See you Sunday,
Andy
