We’re starting something new!

The School of Performing Arts is excited to begin offering a new band program for homeschool and hybrid school students, beginning in the Fall of 2024. This group ensemble will meet on Wednesday mornings on the campus of Stevens Street Baptist Church, and will be open to students in the 6th through 12th grades. No previous instrument experience is required to join.

FAQs

Who can join the band program?

  • The School of Performing Arts band program is open to students who homeschool full or part-time and are between the ages of 11 and 18 (6th through 12th grade) at the start of the Fall semester.

What is the time commitment?

  • The band will rehearse for 90 minutes on Wednesday mornings. The Fall semester will run from September through December, and the Spring semester will run from mid-January to mid-May.

  • Other time commitments to consider are daily practice time at home, weekly private lessons (highly encouraged), and mandatory concert participation at the end of each semester.

What costs should I expect?

  • Enrollment in the band program is $125 per semester with a one-time $25 registration fee per family. Sibling discounts will also be offered.

  • Other costs to consider include instrument rental/purchase, instrument maintenance, and book purchases.

Do I need my own instrument?

  • Yes! Students will be asked to put in regular practice time at home between weekly ensemble rehearsals. The School of Performing Arts will provide a resource of recommended vendors for instrument purchases and rentals.

What instruments are involved, and will I get to pick what I play?

  • The band will consist of woodwind, brass, and concert percussion instruments.

  • The School of Performing Arts will host an instrument try-out night where students will get to learn about and try different types of instruments. Our qualified staff may make recommendations for specific instruments based on a student’s strengths and the need to create a balanced instrumentation for the ensemble.

What is the School of Performing Arts’ relationship with Stevens Street Baptist Church?

  • The School of Performing Arts operates as a direct ministry of Stevens Street Baptist Church, under the oversight from the church pastors and in accordance with the church’s statement of faith. For more information about Stevens Street, visit stevensstreet.org.
